Additional Information

The MAP is the pressure sensor for the intake – manifold air pressure, used to control maximum fuel delivery and for control of turbine vanes in the VNT turbo (on D4D engine Toyotas).  The sensor can be damaged by oil contamination and so an inline filter is placed to keep the oil from getting to the filter.  It is possible to bypass the filter, but you are risking having to by an expensive MAP sensor.

With age, after many heat cycles the changing pressure will crack the original plastic unit and actual pressure  may not be measured by the ECU.  On a 1HD-FTE, this just means less power, but on newer engine, fitted with VNT turbo, a cracked MAP sensor filter can result in the ECU closing the Vanes tighter and potentially result in them becoming excessively hot and melting.  This has been seen on long drives where the engine is under constant load.

A cloth filter is located inside the unit, but cleaning is not required as only engine oil exists inside. The PDI MAP Sensor filter will be a one off purchase, as the oil being filtered out is from oil vapour (so its not dirty) and the idea is that the vapour condenses and drains back into the intake.  This also means it should be installed in the correct orientation and position to allow the oil to drain out and not pool inside the filter.
