The PDI transmission coolers are designed so you should never have to think about transmission temperatures again. The ford transmission cooler is a liquid heat exchanger that is “cooled” with engine coolant running at around 90degrees, while a PDI transmission cooler uses the same 1/2” lines and a stacked plate cooler with a heat dissipation rating of 45,000btu cooled by ambient air. The difference is significant – imagine if your body temp increased 5degC (from 37degC) and you tried cooling it by drinking water at 37degC – much better to drink cold water.
We have the same transmission cooler in a full size Landcruiser making 280kW at the wheels and running a Ford 6 speed gearbox. It gets to the targeted 90degC and goes no higher. With the transmission thermostat removed, we struggle to get past 60degC.
