The ECU is supplied with a base tune that will allow the vehicle to be driven immediately after installation. Additional base tunes will be available in the future.
Free tuning software is available for download, allowing you to make adjustments yourself, including throttle position calibration (minimum and maximum throttle points). If you prefer professional tuning, there are many tuners around Australia, please check with your tuner to confirm they support DID1 software.
The factory 1HD-FTE ECU is not programmable. Traditionally, the only way to alter power delivery has been through piggyback systems such as the Unichip or DTE modules.
Many 1HD-FTE powered Land Cruisers have achieved impressive power gains using these systems. However, piggyback controllers work by modifying or “tricking” factory sensor inputs and outputs rather than directly controlling engine operation. While effective for increasing power, they have limitations when it comes to fine control of injection timing, fuel delivery, drivability and fuel economy.
A standalone ECU provides direct control of engine parameters, allowing for more precise tuning and optimisation.
Fuel consumption varies significantly between vehicles and tuning setups. Some HDJ100 owners report fuel consumption as low as 10L/100km, while others achieve around 13L/100km, and some experience figures closer to 15L/100km. Achieving both strong performance and excellent fuel economy has always been one of the biggest challenges when tuning the 1HD-FTE.
One often overlooked factor is injection timing.
Like the VDJ79, the 1HD-FTE uses exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) strategies during part throttle operation. To assist EGR flow and emissions compliance, the factory calibration typically:
While effective for emissions control, retarded timing can negatively affect fuel economy and overall engine efficiency.
Many piggyback systems either do not alter timing or have limited capability to do so effectively. In some cases, timing manipulation through piggyback systems can result in increased smoke output, unstable idle characteristics or inconsistent performance.
A standalone ECU allows direct and accurate control of injection timing, giving tuners the ability to optimise performance, drivability and fuel economy without relying on sensor manipulation strategies.
Injector condition, injector specification and diesel injection pump calibration modules can all influence timing behaviour and fuel consumption. Significant variation exists between individual vehicles, which is why tuning results can differ from one 1HD-FTE to another.
Direct access to fuel and timing maps provides the flexibility required to optimise each engine combination for its intended use.
